Job Summary:

The person hired for this position will provide advice and consult with a business leadership team in setting short to medium-term packaging design direction, influence major design strategies, provide advice on strategic design processes and continuous improvement initiatives and/or influences policy.

Leads the creative development and execution of the brands guidelines and all related marketing materials in the production of graphics for creation of finished artwork for packaging, (and occasionally also collateral, online materials, communications and programs) ensuring on time delivery and consistency with strategy. Will collaborate closely with designers to create customer experiences for the next generation of consumer products. Sets direction, priorities, and assigns resources with full accountability for results of a design program, manage the projects to make sure the creative is in line with any budge.

Acts as a senior individual contributor as appropriate to the design process and execution of the projects, play a major role in the development of projects by making decisions on the visual elements and oversee the production aspect of art to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness. Teamwork with cross-functional internal and external partners. Typically handles multiple projects of highly strategic scope and complexity within one or more businesses at European and collaborate at global Level. Identifies and promotes self-initiated brand/packaging design programs: demonstrating the ability to articulate business impact with excellent execution leadership. Think out of the box.

Key duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develops and manages brand/packaging design strategy for key initiatives within various business units within a division at a European and/or Global level.
- Delivers excellent design content as an individual contributor in support of project goals.
- Deliver innovation through management of knowledge of cuts, crease, folding, nature and behavior of the packaging material such as paper, corrugated sheet, synthetic or other type of materials. Utilizing 3D layout skills in addition to visual communication to consider how well a design works at multiple angles.
- Guides translation of the strategy and needs assessment information into visual execution plans.
- Manages major design projects, design execution, and or process changes of complex scope in support of functional marketing / business plans, Organizational plans, and 3M’s reputation and brand strategy.
- Identifies, plans, recommends and completes major packaging/ design programs leading to innovative applications having significant impact on the business / staff organization.
- Leads cross-functional teams focused on development / improvement of design and / or structural design execution, processes, quality improvement, cost reduction, cycle time improvement, client satisfaction, and methods changes.
- Establishes and continues to build extensive internal and external networks of support to facilitate completion of programs.
- Creates commercial advantage through activities in one or more of the following areas: (a) broadening a design or technical base; (b) developing fundamental understanding of the design or technical base; (c) applying new technology in innovative branding / packaging concepts, demonstrating feasibility; (d) taking initiative to develop new concepts; (e) providing significant support to clients and/or customers to expand opportunities and reduce risks; (f) synthesize opportunities and technical solutions to create a commercial advantage.
- May contribute to the long term strategic business planning process
- May stimulate or develop major innovations in partnership with customers
- Provides design direction, guidance, training, instruction and/or mentoring and coaching to others in the Design Lab as well as other personnel on design related issues and competencies. May be assigned leadership responsibilities for tasks and/or people on an organizational basis.
- Maintains a high level of brand design-related knowledge, including current trends, design theories, methods, processes and/or issues. May have specifically defined area of expertise. Develops and ensures knowledge and expertise are understood, communicated, and available for use by the Design Lab personnel.
- Continues professional development by handling project and process assignments that require developing more detailed understanding of design processes, industry best practices, and related information.
- Performs all duties in support of Design Lab expectations and responsibilities as well as any agreed upon business unit expectations.

Reports to: European Design Lab Manager

Basic/Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum eight (8) years combined work experience in graphic design, brand design, packaging design, or related design-centric field. (supported by a portfolio of past work).
- Comfortable working with a wide range of graphic design software including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand. Flash, Shockwave, Dream Weaver a plus.
- Must have experience managing design projects from inception to print and managing vendors.
- Excellent understanding of print production.
- Fluent in English (Italian and other languages are a plus).
- Entrepreneurship and collaborative leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in design strategy, brand management, graphic design, design research or related design-centric field.
- Photo direction experience.
