3M is seeking an Intelligent Systems Scientist for the Software Electronic & Mechanical Systems (SEMS) Laboratory located in Maplewood, MN. Be part of what’s next!

Job Summary:

This position will focus on the development of new integrated intelligent systems that add novel degrees of functionality to existing and new 3M materials and technologies, ultimately resulting in new, highly differentiated products. This position will involve working on teams with multidisciplinary backgrounds in order to develop creative, useful and interesting prototypes demonstrating function and value. It provides an opportunity to span from early-stage technology feasibility demonstration to product development and commercialization, as well as early-stage scouting of potential new product and market adjacencies.

Roles and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Lead multi-disciplinary research projects focused on developing technologies for deployment into 3M commercialization programs.
- Participate in identification and prioritization of new technology, product, and business opportunities.
- Collaborate with 3M Divisions and Corporate R&D Labs to turn prototype concepts into viable product opportunities and meeting customer requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university
- Minimum of three (3) years of multidisciplinary systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Applied Math from an accredited university
- Experience architecting software for multi-disciplinary and integrated systems
- Experience with a variety of programming languages and software environments (firmware, cloud, application, web, etc.)
- Experience with data analytics, machine learning, computer vision, data mining and other data processing and analysis techniques
- Experience with sensing systems, sensor or digital signal processing
- Experience with robotics, control systems or real-time software implementations
- Project leadership experience
- Strategic thinking – ability to independently assess and make recommendations for new technology and product opportunities
- Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage scouting and evaluation of new opportunities – flexibility to change direction as additional information becomes available
- Strong time management skills; ability to work through issues and prioritize multiple time demands
- Self-motivated and self-directed, with strong hands-on work ethics, can-do attitude, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to operate effectively in larger, highly cross-functional team
- Ability to “think outside the box”
