Job Summary:
The person hired for the position of System Engineer Researcher will primarily be responsible to provide technical leadership for new product and new technology development initiatives having significant business impact.
Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Identify and develop capabilities and products utilizing on or more of the following: sensor systems, data acquisition systems, wireless sensor networks, cellular and Machine to Machine (M2M) communications, RF systems, electro-mechanical systems, opto-electronic systems, and/or embedded systems
- Effectively collaborate and network with numerous internal and external organizations including 3M Corporate Research Laboratories, universities, government and national laboratories and industry organizations
- Engage current and prospective customers to identify unmet needs and validate progress against new product development objectives
- Demonstrate and communicate the technology/product value relative to market opportunities to a broad range of audiences via clear written and verbal communications
Basic Qualifications:
- Possess or in last year of Master’s degree or higher in an Engineering discipline from an accredited university
- Experience with development of electronic products and/or sensor systems (an Internship, Co-op or Academic Research is considered qualifying)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Biomedical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
- Proficiency in the design and development of Schematic (SCH) and/or Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) using Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD) tools (prefer Altium)
- 3D CAD proficiency
- Design & development of firmware using C language and appropriate assembly languages
- Analog and digital circuit design
- Design and development of Microcontroller based systems (ARM® Cortex® M, Microchip PIC®, Atmel® AVR®, etc.)
- Design and development of wireless sensor systems using commercial off the shelf technologies (ANT, BLE, BT, WiFi, cellular)
- Ability to assemble working prototype PCBA’s for development and testing
- Select and specification of components and equipment based on cost and reliability and creation of BOM
- Failure analysis on components & finished assemblies and approval through testing
- Defining electrical test plans and documents for products
- Create test documents for the newly develop products according to the applicable Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Edison Testing Laboratories (ETL) & Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards
- Experience in design of experiments and/or statistical analysis
- Experience developing intellectual property through patent filings
- Project management or related leadership experience in product development and/or technology commercialization initiatives

Travel: May include up to 15% domestic/international
