3M Fabrication Services in Staples, MN has an opening for a Machinist who will be responsible for setting up and operating a wide variety of type, model and size machine tools; fabricating parts to the required tolerances and specifications; fitting, assembling and making operational machines, assemblies, subassemblies and mechanical devices.

The Machinist position will be responsible for but not limited to the following specific duties:
- Knowing and applying operating principles, purpose, proper application and design limitations of machine tools, machine assemblies and mechanical devices; knows the characteristics of metallic and non metallic materials used in the fabrication, rebuilding and repair of machines and mechanical devices.
- Reading and working to the indicated accuracy, specifications and tolerances as detailed on engineering drawings, machine assembly prints, machine construction prints, blueprints, sketches, equipment manuals and vendor diagrams.
- Working with both U.S. customary and SI (metric) systems of measurement.
- Setting up, operating and reading precision testing and measuring instruments to the instrument manufacturer's specification of accuracy.
- Precision testing and measuring instruments include devices such as calipers, dial indicators, levels, micrometers, profilometers, rules, scales, sine bars, squares, vernier calipers, ring gages, hole gauges and thread gages.
- Performing mathematical calculations including trigonometry to determine dimensions, locations, angles, sizes, shapes and speeds and feeds.
- Operating material handling equipment.
- Using powered and non-powered hand tools such as broaches, dies, drifts, drill motors, files, grinders, hammers, punches, reamers, saws, scrapers, scribers, torque wrenches, and similar hand tools.
- Using machine tool accessories such as angle plates, arbors, boring heads, centers, chucks, clamps, digital readouts, dividing heads, hold-downs, parallels, rotary tables, steady rests, tail stocks, V-bocks, vise, and similar machine tool accessories.
- Selecting, sharpening, forming or making and using cutting tools such as carbide inserts, counterborers, countesinks, drills, and mills, form cuters, grinding wheels, keyway cutters, reamers, shell mills, and mills, tape, tool bits, and similar cutting tools.
- Setting up and operating a wide variety of type, model and size machine tools such as boring bars, drills, grinders, jig bores, key seaters, lathes, milling machines, NC/NCN/MDI machines, presses, saws and similar machine tools.
- Fabricating parts using a wide variety of metallic and nonmetallic materials.
- Disassembling, assembling, aligning and leveling machines and equipment to the required tolerances and specifications.
- Mounting, adjusting, setting clearance aligns, traming, fitting and lubricating mechanical devices such as clutches, brakes, bearings, gear drives, linkages, rolls and shafts to operate to the required tolerances and specifications.
- Providing and maintaining the quality and quantity of personal tools for use on the job as required by the 3M.
- Keeping work area neat and orderly, contributing efforts toward the overall cleanliness and safety of the shop and clean up the general working area.
- Knowing and using safe work methods when performing the job requirements so as to avoid personal injury, injury to co-workers or damage to 3M property.
- Reporting unsafe work conditions or equipment operations to Supervisor immediately.
- Knowing and applying the principles of welding and welding processes.
- Completing required paperwork and uses manual or electronic reporting equipment following established procedures.
- Submitting work method improvement suggestions, craft training suggestions and other cost recommendations to shop supervisor.
- Performing other duties of a similar nature or level as required

This position will require working:
- A fixed 2nd shift
- Qualified applicants will be required to take and pass 3M testing as a part of the selection process.

Must be legally authorized to work in country of employment without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status)
Qualifications

Basic/Minimum Qualifications:
- Associates degree in machine tool technology

Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years experience running basic machining equipment (turning, milling, welding)
- Experience working with CNC, Lathe and Mill equipment
- Experience working with Siemens, Fanuc, Mitsubishi, Mazatrol and Dynapath equipment
- 3 years experience working with Unigraphics CAD software
- 5 years experience working with CNC machining equipment
